Ancient Egyptian Press

One project, incorporating technology, which students thoroughly enjoy in social studies, is “The Ancient Egyptian Press”. Students research different aspects of ancient Egyptian culture, and create a newspaper from a template in Microsoft Publisher (see link to assignment, located on my homepage - http://www.svsd410.org/Domain/872 ).

This is a fun and exciting way to end the unit on Egypt. Students get the opportunity to manipulate the template by inserting their own individual news stories and pictures from the web. This assignment is a great way of culminating the knowledge learned about this ancient society in the preceding weeks. Furthermore, it allows students the freedom to get creative. As they present factual evidence about Egypt, they can also incorporate some fictitious elements.

  1. I would have to agree. The students really enjoyed this activity as a culminating project for our unit on Egypt. One thing I will add is that some students worked alone, but most worked with a partner in my class. This was a great way to ensure they had their facts straight and were being on task. It also reduced anxiety as it's quite a lengthy project, and by being able to split up the work, made it doable for most.
Great project and worth the effort it took to create the template.

  2. Great stuff! I used to do this in the 20 years ago on the Jefferson Presidency. Typed, hand drawn editorial cartoons, one news article and one editorial. Had to learn what an article looked like, same as the opinionated editorial and cartoon looked like. Now that we have the technology the students should really be able to come up with really great document. I split them up into 3s and let them work.. I always loved their wit on the editorial cartoons. If they can learn satire, sarcasm on the topic then they really know their subject. A great way to show what they know.
